She was pregnant.
It was Friday morning when she found out. Friday afternoon, she got fired. She had two other kids to feed, and no idea how to do it. So she did what anyone who needed side cash would have done back in 2011.
She put an ad on Craigslist for her WordPress services.
No one responded. She scoured the web for new freelance platforms, and found one called Fiverr. Saturday afternoon, she joined. A year later, she is a top seller. She is known as the WordPress Queen. Her kids have food on the table. She is not a stand-alone success story.
Job security is a total myth, a scam that lulls you into a false sense of security so you do what you are told. But people are starting to catch on. It’s scary to just have one job. You are a slave. Your entire financial future and mental well-being is in the hands of one person. This is true for both entrepreneurs and employees. Lucky for all of us who don’t want to be slaves to the demands of one boss, Fiverr exists.
Fiverr is the world’s largest marketplace for creative and professional services. I’ve been using them for years, and they have saved me on several occasions. I visited their New York City Office and met with their Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), David Manela. I wanted to know more about the platform and how people can utilize it for additional sources of income or full-time job replacement. I was also interested in figuring out how to empower small business owners and big business owners to enlist talented freelancers to do important tasks at rapid speed. Here are the reasons I think everyone should use Fiverr.com, today.
You’re a millennial: 75% of users on Fiverr’s platform are millenials. So, come on and join — all the cool kids are doing it.
You’re not a millennial: 25% of users on Fiverr’s platform are not millenials. So come on and join — all the cool adults are doing it, too.
Productizing services: Fiverr helps its sellers productize their services. Being your own boss is tough. When you also have to figure out ways to build your own platform from scratch, it is almost impossible. Fiverr sets their sellers up for success by overcoming three main challenges. First, they help you find clients through their platform and marketplace. They have hundreds of thousands of visitors a day. Second, they take away the painful and time consuming negotiation process. You list your price, people decide if they want to pay it. Done. Finally, they collect all the money owed to you on the site. I have a friend who is a criminal defense attorney in Brooklyn. One day we were having dinner and his client called him 15 times (no joke) to ask if he could pay $500 instead of my friend’s $750 rate. Even after 15 emphatic “no”s, the guy ended up paying my friend $400. What? You don’t have to run around Brooklyn courtrooms chasing your hard-earned dollars. You can stay at home in your pajamas and let Fiverr do it for you.
Fiverr Academy: If you want to join the platform as a seller, but are not sure how to get started, Fiverr Academy is your answer. This body of content takes you step-by-step through different types of gigs, how to communicate with customers, and getting your listing set up in the most compelling way possible. And you won’t have $250,000 of debt at the end of this Academy. It’s offered to you at no cost.
Fiverr Podcast: If you need additional resources after Fiverr Academy, the podcast, managed by sellers, provides how-to-guides that will get you started seamlessly as well as other tools you can leverage.
No overhead costs: There is no fee to participate (for either seller or buyer), and there is no up-front investment. If you have a computer, internet connection, and a skill or two, you are in business, today. Oh, and by the way, you set your own schedule.
Growing demand for sellers: 75% of the customers/buyers are small businesses. Small businesses are never going to stop popping up. And they all have similar needs. Websites, logos, content creation, creative design, blogs, PR resources. Get good at providing these resources, and you are in business, today.
Small businesses need customers: Duh! But this is the reason almost every small business goes out of small business. Learn or share knowledge as a digital marketer, SEO expert, or blog optimizer and go ahead and raise your prices a bit. You are in demand, and always will be.
Price freedom: It used to be $5 for everything, but not anymore. Yes, there are still a number of $5 listings available, but sellers are free to mark up their services as high as they’d like. You are in control.
The services you need at the click of a button: The simplicity of the site allows you to take a very specific look at the services you need. If you wanted a voiceover, in English, with a French accent for $15 bucks, tomorrow, you can find it with one click. Or you can listen to this podcast with David, who has a French accent. Either way, you win. Just click a button, and poof, magic.
New sellers aren’t penalized because of a lack of experience: Fiverr is working hard to ensure new sellers with limited reviews still have a chance to succeed. They are promoted by being displayed on the site in favorable locations and more than once.
David offered me cheese and bread in true French fashion after our meeting. As we ate, he told me why he believes in Fiverr. He has seen success story after success story. Musicians selling custom songs to businesses, voiceover artists working full-time thanks to the platform, and more. While the businesses are all different, there is one commonality. The sellers on Fiverr are making money doing something they love.
“It changes peoples’ lives,” he said. And you know something,
I believe him.
